Lockhart Family Dollar (Lockhart, Texas)

Google Maps Street View, 2022

Family Dollar opened a new store in Lockhart at 1118 S. Colorado Street in 2004 (a previous store in Lockhart had closed in 1997). In 2005, the company introduced a more modern logo based on the old 1970s-era one with a little logo of a family and a new color scheme, while retaining the original typeface. The logo here was updated in early 2011.

This is split from this post, which in turn was from Carbon-izer.

Target on Sanger Avenue (Waco, Texas)

This is from Carbon-izer from a page that is soon to be revamped. Former Target store opened in October 1981 (T-155) and closed in 2003 with a new Target Greatland about two miles away. It has since been renovated into a variety of medical offices (Six West Medical Center).

Burned-Out Grandy's (Dallas, Texas)

Slightly modified picture from Google Maps, originally from "Sia S."

Grandy's continues to die with just 16 locations remaining as of this writing, but one of them, at 3738 Marvin D. Love Freeway (US-67) suffered a catastrophic fire in 2023 but despite being boarded up in June 2024 (and demolished by spring 2025) Google claims it is still open (as of this writing) despite being gone from the company's website and never rebuilt. A sad fate for a chain that once claimed nearly 200 restaurants.

This particular restaurant dated back to 1984 as store #2040 (renumbered to #5302 in 2019).

UPDATE 07-29-2026: The Las Cruces, NM location has also closed, so that number has dropped to 15. Information on 3806 S. Polk Street has been moved to this post. Store number and opening also added.

Conroe's James Coney Island (Conroe, Texas)

2013 Google Street View, edited slightly

The Conroe James Coney Island opened in December 2004 (or early 2005) but at some point, probably late 2013 or January 2014 at the very latest, closed. Replacement tenant Raising Cane's Raising Canes renovated it instead of building new, and as a result, when it reopened as Raising Cane's in June 2014, it was the biggest Raising Cane's in the country, though not by much (according to the website, which used to post opening dates and tidbits about each restaurant).

It is located at 2127 West Davis Street. This was split off from this post.

The "McSchlotzsky's" (San Marcos, Texas)

Much like how I covered Hempstead's abandoned Shell or the Schulenburg McDonald's, this one is a page I made previously on Carbon-izer. The Schlotzsky's Deli here operated from about 1999 to 2004 and became a McDonald's in 2006, but kept the interior layout and much of the decor of the old restaurant. Check it out here. A more recent renovation from the early 2020s made it look less like a Schlotzsky's but still recognizable.

It is located at 4060 S. Interstate 35.

Failed Jack in the Box and Commercial Circle (New Braunfels, Texas)

Source: Crexi

This failed Jack in the Box at 3211 Commercial Circle only operated from around 2011 to 2018, and it's not hard to see why. It's also not easy to see the Jack in the Box, even from the highway frontage road.

It's neighbors are New Braunfels ER & Hospital (3221 Commercial Circle) and Shipley Do-Nuts (3201 Commercial Circle), the latter has done much better than Jack in the Box has.

The Barrington Suites (Temple, Texas)

Picture from 2017 from "Killeen 304", cropped. Source.

Expanding from the Southwest H.K. Dodgen Loop page (and originally appearing on Carbon-izer.com) is The Barrington Suites, a combination apartment/motel which always served as such and opened in 1984 originally. It sounds like it could be a winner in theory, with its close-to-Scott & White location for long-term (month) stays but reviews are mixed (as permanent motel room tenants is usually a disaster).

One thing that it could probably use to help sell the "motel" side of the business (and add some class to the residential side) is an on-site restaurant/coffee shop (which it desperately needs, but lacks). In doing research for this I found that while this is the only one of its type around there were once several others, with three in San Angelo alone. The one on Knickerbocker Road has been gone for years but old aerial photos shows it as looking almost identical (the other two are apartment buildings now, but look less similar).

UPDATE 05-13-2026: Removed Lowe's as part of redoing page for Carbon-izer.
